Parts of Ourselves

Category

This subpersonalities coaching tool helps clients understand the different “parts” within themselves—those internal voices, identities, and patterns that influence how they think, feel, and behave. As described on page 1, we are not the same person in every situation. We shift, adapt, protect, perform, avoid, push, or retreat depending on which inner part is in the lead. When over-identified with one part, clients can feel stuck, overwhelmed, or conflicted.

Parts of Ourselves (Subpersonalities) brings clarity to this inner landscape. It supports clients in recognising these internal characters, understanding their intentions, and learning how to access a centred self capable of making more conscious choices. On page 2, the guide describes subpersonalities as “internal actors” competing for attention—each with its own worldview, beliefs, fears, and motivations. The tool helps clients shift from being run by these parts to leading them.

When to Use This Tool

This framework is especially useful when your coachee:

  • Wants deeper self-understanding or emotional awareness

  • Feels pulled in opposing directions and struggles to make decisions

  • Experiences strong inner critics, protectors, or conflicting desires

  • Faces interpersonal tensions influenced by internal parts

  • Needs a more compassionate relationship with themselves

Why This Tool Works

Clients often try to “fix” themselves without understanding what’s truly happening inside. Subpersonality work brings awareness to these parts and their roles. Each part—whether protective, perfectionistic, driven, fearful, playful, or avoidant—has a purpose. On pages 3–4, the framework emphasises recognition, acceptance, coordination, and integration. When clients acknowledge these parts rather than suppress them, they gain emotional freedom, improved decision-making, and increased compassion for themselves.

This approach strengthens self-leadership. Instead of getting caught in inner conflict or reacting automatically, clients learn to observe their “inner orchestra,” understand each instrument, and consciously decide who takes the lead. This opens the door to more balanced behaviour, clearer boundaries, healthier relationships, and more aligned choices.
