This conflict resolution coaching tool helps clients understand challenging situations from multiple viewpoints so they can resolve tension, improve communication and create healthier relationships. The Perceptual Positions framework, introduced on page 1, enables individuals to explore three distinct viewpoints—self, other and observer—revealing insights that are impossible to access from a single perspective.
This method draws from Gestalt psychology, NLP and coaching practice. It is widely used because interpersonal conflict often gets stuck when people are locked into their own viewpoint. By shifting positions, clients temporarily step out of their emotional loops, assumptions and defensive patterns. This opens cognitive and emotional space, enabling more empathy, clarity and creative solutions.
The approach is particularly useful when coachees are dealing with relational strain—misunderstandings, disagreements, difficult conversations or unresolved dynamics with colleagues, family members or friends. When clients can “try on” the viewpoint of the other person, they begin to understand the emotions, needs and motivations driving the behaviour. By the time they move into an observer position, as described on page 6, they gain neutrality and objectivity, which reduces reactivity and increases wisdom.
Resolve an interpersonal conflict
Gain deeper understanding of someone’s behaviour
Improve communication and empathy
Reflect on emotional triggers and assumptions
Explore what is really happening beneath the surface
Access a more objective viewpoint to move forward constructively
Perceptual Positions works because conflict often narrows perspective. Clients become fused with their own emotional experience and cannot imagine the internal world of the other person. Page 4 highlights how the first position anchors them in their own thoughts and needs, while the second position reveals the other person’s perspective—thoughts, feelings, intentions and unmet needs. Finally, the third position (page 6) provides a neutral, observer-level insight that helps the coachee integrate both sides without judgement.
This combination softens defensiveness, increases understanding and helps clients move from frustration to constructive action. It turns conflict into an opportunity for awareness, empathy and choice.
