Imagine a road trip with multiple diversions, traffic congestions, and roadblocks! It would be like wandering through a maze without getting any closer to your endpoint.

Not exactly your dream trip, right?

Similarly, in a coaching session, goal setting is like your personal ‘Google Maps’ where you select the best available route, feed in your end in advance and work towards it. Without a goal, your coaching sessions would be like having interesting conversations and exploring different paths but ultimately, never reaching your desired destination.

By now we know that goal setting is not just the first step, it is also the secret to a successful coaching session. Concrete yet doable goal setting sets the mood and determines the outcome of a coaching session.

First, what is a goal in a coaching session, why is it ‘doable’ and most importantly, why ‘one’?

Think of your goal as your guiding star, always keeping you focused and guiding you through the twists and turns of your coaching conversations. But, simply, having a guiding star is not enough; the star should be within the reach. Setting an ‘unreachable’ goal in a session might sound inspiring and challenging but it can soon lead to discouragement and frustration.

Hence, help your coachee to set ‘doable/realistic’ goals for the coaching session.

Finally, why do I stress the ‘ONE’ goal in the ‘ONE’ Session? The answer is simple. One goal helps keep the coaching session on track, lays down the session’s foundation and finally ensures effectiveness and success.

Goal setting is in the hands of the coachee and mostly they come to the coaching session with multiple goals in mind. In that case, the goals must be clarified and prioritized at the beginning of the session.

Sometimes, however, the coachees are not sure of what they want. They know something isn’t right about their situation, but they don’t know what they want from the coaching session. This is a challenging situation when, as a coach, we must delve deep into the coachee’s emotional and professional state through a series of questions and prompts. This will help them clear their mind and express their goals clearly.

In today’s blog, we look closer at the importance of having ‘one’ clear and specific goal at a time to avoid deviation, distraction, and heartbreak! I am a big fan of goal setting in coaching – I know through supervising and mentoring other coaches, when there is no goal for the session the coach feels lost and imposter syndrome kicks in.

Here’s some other reasons why:

Singularity = Focused Action: Imagine your brain as a laser. Sharp, focused, and ready to hit the bullseye! Now imagine you had to fire multiple targets with a single beam. Not ideal! Hence, singularity gives the person a clear path to action. Without distraction or interference, you stay focused and move closer to the desired outcome.

Deep dive and discover golden insights: Your coaching session is nothing but a journey. With only one target, you can dig deeper and remove hidden obstacles. You can get to the bottom of things and unearth secret Ah-Ha moments.

Ownership, and accountability: As we all agree, ownership and accountability are the keys to progress. With ‘one goal at a time’ it is easier to track progress, celebrate success and identify roadblocks that might slow your coachee down.

Momentum be with you: With ownership comes motivation and motivation keeps the momentum alive! Each small success fuels motivation and helps in moving forward with confidence and excitement. Remember, achieving goals is not just ticking boxes. It is about building a strong character and a winning attitude.

While some might think, that sticking to a single goal limits the coaching journey, in reality, it’s quite the opposite.  Singularity is not about limitation, it’s about expansion. By focusing on one powerful goal at a time, you’re setting your coachees up for a transformative coaching experience that leads to real, lasting change.
