Alright, let’s talk about something that keeps coming back to my coaching sessions, again and again: Are coaching and mentoring the same?

The answer is nope!

While both aim to help you become a more awesome you, their approaches are quite distinct. In today’s blog, let’s dive deep into the two concepts and break them down, shall we?

Let’s begin by understanding them.

Mentoring is simply inspiring others through your journey, providing guidance, and helping them to travel a similar path to achieve similar results. This is a situation where you give advice, teach from your lessons learned.

In other words, mentoring is telling someone what to do.

Coaching, on the other hand, believes that the client has all the necessary resources for success. The coach’s role is to create a safe space for the coachees to come up with their conclusions.

That being said, both coaching and mentoring have their benefits and can be used in relevant circumstances. It is for the client to identify their needs and decide whether they want to work with a coach or a mentor.

Here are some key facts about coaching and mentoring that I believe will make the decision-making process easier for you.

Ask vs. Tell – Coaches mostly ask powerful questions to spark new ideas and guide coachees in their journey of self-awareness. For this, coaches do not require any industry knowledge and are not tied up to any specific field. Mentors, on the other hand, are responsible for helping the mentee, based on personal experience, and telling them what to do. They are, mostly, industry experts and they share insights and tips from what they have done or what a mentee should do.

Accountability, Long-Term Development & Quick Solutions: Coaching allows the coachee to sit in the driver’s seat and navigate through traffic. That may seem like a slow process but that nurtures growth and builds accountability. Mentoring, however, offers quick and immediate solutions. Mentees simply follow guidance and get results.

Short-term focus & long-term relationships: Coaching experiences are often short-term (up to 12  sessions). They address one challenge at a time and are designed to help the coachee achieve specific goals or develop a skill. Mentoring is more long-term and involves handholding. It may last up to years.

Immediate action vs. broader focus: Coaches equip their coachees with tools and strategies, develop an action plan and enable them to get going by leveraging their inner strengths and self-awareness. This ensures more immediate results (if done properly). Mentors often go beyond a specific goal and share insights and expertise to navigate similar challenges they have faced.

Now here’s the cool part: Coaching and mentoring are not at loggerheads with each other. It’s quite the opposite. They are both designed to support clients’ growth and help them achieve their desired outcome.  If clubbed together, they can be powerful allies in a personal growth journey. Imagine a coach pushing your boundaries and inspiring you to think out of the box. Alongside, you have a mentor who helps you with the right advice and interesting insights from real-life experiences. Talk about a dream team!

What’s even better, you get to choose what is best for you and the best part is you can have both!
