Leadership Arc

The leadership arc exercise is a powerful reflective coaching tool that helps leaders step back from the constant push toward “what’s next” and instead explore the personal and professional experiences that have shaped who they are today. In leadership coaching, future goals often dominate the conversation, but meaningful growth starts with understanding the journey that brought the leader to this point. This tool gives clients a structured way to map out their highs, lows, lessons, and defining moments, creating a clearer sense of identity and direction.

The exercise invites leaders to visually draw their arc—beginning with early career experiences on the left and ending with the present on the right. Along the arc, they mark significant events, including successes above the line and challenges below it, as described on page 4. These events may include breakthroughs, setbacks, transitions, milestones, personal turning points, and leadership challenges that influenced their growth.

By laying out their story visually, leaders can easily spot patterns: where confidence grew, where resilience was built, where values were shaped, and where decisions shifted their trajectory. The leadership arc exercise supports deeper self-awareness by helping leaders recognise the strengths and internal resources that have consistently helped them navigate their journey. It also highlights how past adversity shaped their current leadership style, decision-making, and presence.
