What is Mentor Coaching?
Mentor coaching is a process that involves coaching and feedback in a collaborative, appreciative, and dialogued manner. The aim is to enhance the coach’s capacity to provide high-quality coaching services. Unlike traditional coaching, which may focus on the coachee’s goals, mentor coaching zeroes in on developing the skills and effectiveness of the coach.
The ICF's Definition and Expectations
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) sets the standard for professional coaching worldwide. According to the ICF, mentor coaching involves coaching and feedback from a more experienced coach. This process is designed to help new coaches achieve and demonstrate the levels of coaching competency and capability demanded by the desired credential level.
Requirements for ICF Credentialing
To become a qualified coach through the ICF, engaging in mentor coaching is a mandatory requirement. Here’s what the ICF expects:
- Minimum Hours: Coaches seeking ICF credentials must complete a minimum of 10 hours of mentor coaching over a period of at least three months.
- Group and Individual Sessions: The mentor coaching must include both individual and group sessions, with at least three of the ten hours being one-on-one.
- Experienced Mentor Coach: The mentor must be an ICF-certified coach with the appropriate level of experience and credentials.
